GSM
applications
The Smartcard SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) for GSM applications
consists of a dedicated microcontroller, various embedded
memory blocks and I/O integrated into a single chip, with
its associated software.
Mobile Internet and mobile commerce
In addition to voice and SMS functions a standard like WAP
(Wireless Application Protocol), allows the end-user market
to leave the desktop and access Internet content from the
mobile handset. WIM (WAP Identity Module) function allows
extended authentication and secure access control, offering
the mobile phone users access to extended Internet services
and mobile transactions on the web.
3G/UMTS applications
The 3G Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) is
a major evolution for the mobile world as it will provide
access to voice, music and images. This technology will speed
up data transmissions over the network, facilitating the creation
of new application such as video services and mobile imaging
(MMS).
ST Smartcard solutions
ST’s ST16 MCU-based Smartcard ICs have a demonstrated
success in GSM mobile phones with over hundreds of million
chips in use. SIM functionality has been enhanced by each
generation of the ST19 platform, now providing large memory
capacities and a more powerful CPU core with enhanced security
features. The innovative SmartJ™ 32 bit RISC platform
is based on an advanced architecture providing non-volatile
memory sizes up to 128KB, higher computational power and sophisticated
security concepts. The SmartJ™ platform is deal for
the high value Universal IC Card (UICC) and the Universal
Secure Identification Module (USIM).
