Telecommunications:

STMicroelectronics is a global independent semiconductor company and is a leader in developing and delivering semiconductor solutions across the spectrum of microelectronics applications. An unrivaled combination of silicon and system expertise, manufacturing strength, Intellectual Property (IP) portfolio and strategic partners positions the Company at the forefront of System-on-Chip (SoC) technology and its products play a key role in enabling today's convergence trends.

STMicroelectronics produces a diverse range of semiconductors - from single transistors to microprocessors with millions of components on the same 'silicon chip' - which can be found in many disparate products or environments - from high performance supercomputers to everyday items such as telephones, cars, toasters, or even light bulbs.

The product portfolio covers all of the major categories of semiconductor devices: dedicated ICs, microprocessors and semi custom, memories, standard ICs, discretes.

The market for semiconductor products in telecommunications is expected to continue to expand rapidly. Networks and central office installations utilize line card chipsets (analog and ISDN) as well as protocol controllers (HDLC, X25, Frame Relay) from the Company.

ST is also present in the emerging Asynchronous Transfer Mode market, and is implementing ATM over Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line (ASDL) technology, which increases data rates over existing telephone subscriber loop networks by up to a few hundred times.

As with other industry applications, the telecom segment is migrating to super integration solutions. The next generation of digital cellular phone can use a ST "system-on-a-chip" approach using no more than four chips.

GSM applications
The Smartcard SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) for GSM applications consists of a dedicated microcontroller, various embedded memory blocks and I/O integrated into a single chip, with its associated software.

Mobile Internet and mobile commerce
In addition to voice and SMS functions a standard like WAP (Wireless Application Protocol), allows the end-user market to leave the desktop and access Internet content from the mobile handset. WIM (WAP Identity Module) function allows extended authentication and secure access control, offering the mobile phone users access to extended Internet services and mobile transactions on the web.

3G/UMTS applications
The 3G Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) is a major evolution for the mobile world as it will provide access to voice, music and images. This technology will speed up data transmissions over the network, facilitating the creation of new application such as video services and mobile imaging (MMS).

ST Smartcard solutions
ST’s ST16 MCU-based Smartcard ICs have a demonstrated success in GSM mobile phones with over hundreds of million chips in use. SIM functionality has been enhanced by each generation of the ST19 platform, now providing large memory capacities and a more powerful CPU core with enhanced security features. The innovative SmartJ™ 32 bit RISC platform is based on an advanced architecture providing non-volatile memory sizes up to 128KB, higher computational power and sophisticated security concepts. The SmartJ™ platform is deal for the high value Universal IC Card (UICC) and the Universal Secure Identification Module (USIM).
